Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)
EMDR
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), developed by Dr. Francine Shapiro, utilizes bilateral stimulation through eye movements or other rhythmic left-right stimulation. During EMDR, you might focus on a memory associated with negative emotions and beliefs while focusing on a bilateral stimulation. EMDR allows a person to see cognitive and affective material in a less distressing way. EMDR allows for new ways of cognitively re-organizing thoughts and gives way to more calm and empowered feelings.
EMDR is currently used to treat Post-traumatic Stress Disorder and has also been successfully used to treat anxiety, depression, stress, phobias, sleep problems, addictions, pain relief, and performance anxiety.
